The Washington Wizards are making headlines by acquiring Anthony Davis from the Dallas Mavericks in a significant eight-player trade, which also includes draft picks for the Mavericks, according to a reliable source. This controversial move indicates that the Mavericks are distancing themselves from the much-maligned trade last year that sent their star player Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, with Davis being the centerpiece of that deal.
Former general manager Nico Harrison, who was dismissed from his role in November, orchestrated the initial trade that left many fans feeling disillusioned. Speculation surrounding Davis’s future had been rampant since Harrison's departure, especially given the team's underwhelming start to the current season.
In this latest transaction, the Wizards are sending Khris Middleton, AJ Johnson, Malaki Branham, and Marvin Bagley III to the Mavericks, along with two first-round draft picks and three second-round picks. The insider who provided this information requested anonymity as the deal awaits official approval by the NBA.
On the flip side, the Wizards will be acquiring three guards from Dallas: Jaden Hardy, D'Angelo Russell, and Dante Exum.
This trade marks a pivotal shift for the Wizards, who have struggled in recent seasons, finishing with dismal records of 67 and 64 losses. Just last month, they traded for Trae Young, and now with the addition of Davis—who is among the league's elite talents—the team aims to revitalize its roster with promising young players like Alex Sarr, the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming 2024 draft.
However, it remains uncertain whether Young or Davis will play significant minutes this season, which may actually benefit the Wizards. If Washington's draft pick falls outside the top eight, they would lose it, adding pressure to the team's performance.
Nonetheless, this trade suggests that the Wizards are ready to abandon their hopes of lottery luck and instead focus on building a competitive roster. Davis, a ten-time All-Star, has been sidelined since January 8 due to a left hand injury and is not expected to return until after the upcoming All-Star break. The previous trade involving him generated backlash because it involved the Mavericks relinquishing a generational talent in Doncic, who was just 25 at the time, in exchange for a player with a track record of injuries.
Indeed, Davis has only played in 31 out of 84 possible games over the past two seasons, including two play-in tournament matches last year. His injuries have ranged from core muscle issues to calf strains, culminating in his current hand injury sustained while defending against Utah's Lauri Markkanen.
For Dallas, this trade signifies a strategic pivot towards welcoming Cooper Flagg as a potential new franchise cornerstone following Doncic. Flagg, the rookie No. 1 overall pick, recently set a scoring record for teenagers in the NBA with an impressive 49 points against Charlotte. He is currently enjoying a three-game streak of scoring over 30 points, another remarkable feat for an under-20 player.
Despite Flagg's impressive performances, the Mavericks have lost all three games within this scoring streak and are currently facing a five-game losing stretch, marking their worst run of the season. They sit at 12th place in the Western Conference with a record of 19-31, raising doubts about whether guard Kyrie Irving will return this season after tearing his ACL last March.
The Mavericks are now on track to potentially miss the playoffs for a second consecutive year, having previously made it to the 2024 NBA Finals with Doncic and Irving, where they were ultimately defeated by Boston in five games.
Harrison's decision to trade Doncic was rooted in the belief that pairing Davis with Irving would keep the Mavericks competitive for years to come.
