Amidst the chaos, communities are coming together to support each other. Katrina Bowden at the White Hart Hotel in Longwood has opened her pub as a safe haven for those who have fled their homes. She shares, "We’ve got a couple of locals staying in with us, and we’ve been providing food for the CFA up the road. We’ve had some people pop through last night too as they were waiting to see what to do and what the go was. We’re sort of known as a local lounge room here, so everybody comes here to meet up."
The Heatwave's Impact: A Double-Edged Sword
Victoria experienced its first heatwave of summer on Wednesday, with temperatures soaring to 44.3 degrees in Longerenong, near Horsham. While Melbourne's CBD gets a brief respite from high temperatures, regions battling uncontrolled bushfires won't have the same luck. The weather bureau predicts that Longwood, about 160 kilometers north of Melbourne, will reach a maximum of 42 degrees, with hazy conditions and zero chance of rain.
Property Losses: Unconfirmed Reports, Ongoing Assessments
Authorities are investigating reports of property losses overnight as fire crews work tirelessly to control the "intense" bushfire north of Melbourne. A spokeswoman from the State Control Centre confirms, "There have been unconfirmed reports of property losses at the Longwood fire. Crews will be undertaking assessments today to determine the extent of the losses."
Evacuation Warnings: A Race Against Time
Residents in Avenel, Caveat, Dropmore, Highlands, Ruffy, Tarcombe, Terip Terip, Locksley, Longwood, Longwood East, Ruffy, and Upton Hill are urged to evacuate the area immediately. The warning specifies, "Residents in the SOUTH of a line drawn from Maggies Lane to Mount Monica to Tarcombe Road, Nolans Road, Buntings Hill Road could be impacted."
