US and France Conduct Joint Space Maneuvers: A New Era of Military Collaboration (2026)

In a significant move signaling enhanced military cooperation, French and American military satellites have successfully executed joint maneuvers as part of a broader multinational war plan spearheaded by US Space Command. This announcement was made by France’s Space Command on Sunday, highlighting the successful collaboration between these two countries in the realm of space defense operations.

The French statement described this operation as a remarkable display of their combined ability to respond and maneuver effectively within orbit. The operation is categorized as a bilateral rendezvous and proximity operation (RPO), which is an integral element of the US SPACECOM’s Multinational Force-Operation Olympic Defender. This initiative aims to showcase France's capacity for conducting dynamic and responsible missions to deter any adversarial actions that may threaten its interests in outer space.

Rendezvous and proximity operations involve two satellites carefully maneuvering in close quarters, which can serve various military purposes including inspection, refueling, repair, or even offensive actions against enemy satellites.

A spokesperson from US SPACECOM confirmed to Breaking Defense that France had joined forces with the US for this operation. Although the command acknowledged the exercise on the same day, it refrained from specifying the participating country at that time.

“This recent joint effort not only underscores our coalition’s capability to devise and implement agile and responsible operations in space, but also demonstrates our unwavering commitment to collaborate closely in safeguarding our mutual interests in this domain,” the spokesperson emphasized.

The French announcement noted that while this satellite rendezvous marked the second collaborative effort with the US military, it was notably the first one that was jointly planned under the Operation Olympic Defender framework. France officially became a participant in the US-led space warfare planning and exercise program last October. Previously, the first joint RPO had been conducted concurrently but was independently organized.

Currently, six allied nations are actively participating in the Olympic Defender initiative, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Among these, the UK has also successfully conducted a joint RPO with the US, which took place from September 4 to September 12.

While the specific satellites involved in these joint operations have not been disclosed publicly by the US or its allies, private space tracking company COMSPOC revealed insights about the maneuvers. For instance, during the exercise with the UK, a US Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program (GSSAP) satellite, known as USA 271, began its movements on September 5 and approached the UK’s SKYNET 5A military communications satellite closely.

Regarding the Franco-American operation, COMSPOC monitored the activities involving another GSSAP satellite, USA 324, alongside France’s SYRACUSE 3A. These satellites engaged in three separate sets of maneuvers throughout November, with observations indicating that SYRACUSE 3A typically led the movements, followed a day later by USA 324. The closest distance achieved during their operations was approximately 25.1 kilometers (15.6 miles).

During the Air & Space Forces Association’s annual conference in September, a senior official from the Space Force mentioned that discussions were underway with other partners in the Olympic Defender initiative regarding potential future operations similar to the recent maneuvers.

While details about future operations remain undisclosed, the spokesperson from USSPACECOM stated, "Multinational Force – Operation OLYMPIC DEFENDER continues to evolve into an integrated, operational team capable of responding collectively to threats, should they arise. Refining our common tactics through planning, training, and executing joint operations is crucial for enhancing the capabilities of our multinational force."

This collaboration in space represents not only a strategic advancement for military operations but also poses interesting questions about the future of international relations in outer space. What implications do you think these joint exercises will have for global security? Are we witnessing a new era of space militarization? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
