Here's the gist: Super League clubs are considering a rule change that would grant them extra salary cap space if they transfer players to these new teams. Currently, the salary cap is set at £2.1 million. So, how would this work?
Imagine a player earning £75,000 a year. If they were to move from one existing Super League club to another in 2025, the selling club would gain £75,000 in cap space. However, under this new proposal, if that same player were to move to Bradford, York, or Toulouse, the selling club would get a whopping £150,000 in cap space – double the player's salary!
Think about the implications! A club could potentially move three players with a combined cap value of £150,000 to these new teams and suddenly have an extra £300,000 to spend on new players. That's a huge boost!
This idea was first floated after last season, but it's still not set in stone. The specifics, including the exact amount of extra cap dispensation, are still being worked out. The proposal needs a strong majority to pass, but not everyone is on board.
But here's where it gets controversial...
One anonymous club CEO voiced concerns, stating that the move, "is being dressed up as helping the new sides compete in 2026 but what it’s actually doing is allowing more clubs to spend recklessly beyond the cap."
And this is the part most people miss: The changes are intended to be temporary, only applying to the newly promoted teams in 2026. This has raised concerns about the long-term financial impact, particularly in 2027 and beyond, as clubs who take advantage of the dispensation will need to get back under the £2.1 million limit.
