A Thrilling Start: Salford RLFC's Historic First Game and the Crowd's Response
An electric atmosphere filled the CorpArq Stadium as over 5,000 spectators witnessed the birth of a new rugby league club, Salford RLFC, in their inaugural match against Oldham.
But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, unexpected. Despite the excitement and the rapid formation of the team, Salford RLFC faced a challenging debut, going down 44-0 to the experienced Oldham side.
Salford's journey began during the off-season, rising from the ashes of the liquidated Salford Red Devils. A consortium led by former Red Devil, Mason Caton-Brown, stepped in to revive the club, successfully winning the bid to do so just weeks before their first game.
And this is the part most people miss... the incredible support and anticipation leading up to this historic moment. With less than a month to prepare, the new club's men's team took to the field, and the crowd's enthusiasm was palpable.
The game itself was a tale of two halves. Oldham, backed by a strong travelling fan base, led 16-0 at the break, with Ben O'Keefe, Ted Chapelhow, and Tom Nisbet crossing the line. However, a serious medical emergency halted the game for around half an hour, with both clubs' medical teams and paramedics rushing to assist a supporter in need.
As the game resumed, Oldham continued their dominance, adding 28 unanswered points in the second half. Riley Dean, Jake Bibby, Cole Geyer, Owen Farnworth, and Ryan Lannon all contributed to the scoreline.
Salford, still seeking their first points, now turn their attention to the Challenge Cup, where they face Hammersmith Hills Hoists in the Second Round. The winner of that encounter will earn a prestigious Third Round tie against Super League giants, Hull FC.
Meanwhile, Oldham host Orrell St James at Boundary Park, with the potential reward of welcoming Dewsbury Rams, King Cross Park, or West Hull in the Third Round.
