Russian attack on Kyiv leaves city divided, two dead, and energy crisis deepens
The Russian military's drone and missile assault on Kyiv has resulted in a devastating impact, claiming two lives and injuring 37 others. The attack also plunged the western half of the city into darkness, leaving over 500,000 residents without power. This isn't the first time Ukraine has faced such an onslaught; nearly 600 drones and 36 rockets were launched, highlighting the urgent need for Western air defense support and other forms of assistance.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of swift action, stating, 'We must act without delay to ensure our air defense systems have sufficient missiles and all necessary resources for protection and pressure on Russia.'
The aftermath of the attack revealed a grim scene. A third victim was found in the surrounding Kyiv region, and the city echoed with the sounds of two distinct attack waves, the first at around 1 am and the second at 7 am, before an all-clear signal was given just before 9:30 am.
Ukraine's military claimed responsibility for striking the Afipsky oil refinery in Krasnodar Krai, a significant facility in southern Russia. This refinery supplies diesel and jet fuel to Russian forces, and the attack caused a fire at the plant.
Russia's strategy of targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure during the winter months aims to break the country's civil resistance as the war enters its fourth year. This campaign coincides with a corruption scandal involving key Ukrainian political figures, including Andriy Yermak, the president's chief of staff, who resigned after his flat was searched by anti-corruption officials.
The scandal has weakened Kyiv's position, and Russia hopes to capitalize by continuing its bombing and potentially triggering a financial crisis. Ukraine is seeking a €140 billion loan from the EU, secured by Russian central bank assets, to bolster its budget from next year. However, opposition from Belgium, where most of the funds are held, threatens to delay an agreement by the end of the year.

An opposition MP suggests appointing Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine's ambassador to the UK and former head of the armed forces, as a trusted figure. Liudmyla Buimister, a Ukrainian politician, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for a leader who is trusted by the military, citizens, and international partners.
While Zaluzhnyi has been considered a potential political challenger to President Zelenskyy, his willingness to take on the role remains uncertain. Yermak, who led Ukraine's negotiating team, expressed his determination to join the front lines, but his exact role in the military is unclear.
The ongoing talks between Ukraine and the US, which stalled during the Thanksgiving holiday, are expected to resume soon. A Ukrainian delegation, led by Rustem Umerov, is in Washington, and a 19-point counterproposal has been shared with Moscow. However, with Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent declaration of the Ukrainian leadership's illegitimacy, a breakthrough in negotiations seems unlikely.
