Racing Updates: Weather Conditions and Track Inspections (2026)

The racing world is abuzz with the latest updates on weather-related inspections and race cancellations in Britain and Ireland. Despite the ongoing wet weather, Newbury Racecourse is confident it will be 'absolutely fine' for the upcoming big meeting on Saturday. Clerk of the Course George Hill assured Sky Sports Racing on Wednesday morning that the track is in good condition, despite the heavy overnight rain. The hurdles track is described as 'heavy, soft in places', while the chase course is 'a bit better, soft, heavy in places'.

However, the forecast predicts more rain for tomorrow, with between eight and ten millimetres expected to start at 5 am. A brief break is anticipated before another front pushes up from the south on Thursday evening, continuing into Friday. Despite the potential showers on Saturday, Hill believes it won't significantly impact the ground, which will be a mix of heavy and soft.

Newbury's confidence is evident in its drainage system, which has handled the substantial amount of rain. Since the last meeting on January 14, 116 millimetres of rain have fallen, compared to 61 millimetres at the same time last year. This near-doubling of rainfall has been well-managed, and the racecourse is set to host the big races on Saturday, with the hope that top horses will declare on Thursday morning.

In contrast, the Grand Military Gold Cup meeting at Sandown Park on Friday has been called off due to a waterlogged track. Course officials conducted an 8 am check on Wednesday, and after another 10mm of rain on Tuesday, the course was deemed unraceable. Further rainfall is expected in the Esher area on Thursday and raceday itself, leading to the meeting's abandonment. Efforts will be made to reschedule the race at a later fixture.

The latest going and inspection updates for the upcoming days are as follows:

  • Wednesday: Kempton (All-Weather), Ludlow (Soft), Newcastle (All-Weather), Sedgefield (Good to Soft, Good in places), Punchestown (Heavy)
