On January 27th, Angelenos basked in the sun and enjoyed a pleasant boat ride in Echo Park, little did they know that a dramatic heat wave was about to unfold. The Los Angeles Times reports that on February 4th, 2026, record-breaking temperatures swept across the city, with LAX and UCLA reaching a scorching 87 and 88 degrees, respectively.
But here's where it gets interesting: temperatures skyrocketed to a whopping 20 degrees above the typical February norms, with valleys and coastal areas basking in the 80s and low 90s. Meteorologist Rose Schoenfeld described the situation as "pretty dramatic."
While February heat spikes are not entirely uncommon, this particular event caught the attention of many. The National Weather Service confirmed that several records were set across the Los Angeles Basin, with temperatures soaring into the 80s even along the usually cooler coast.
And this is the part most people miss: although these temperatures are remarkable, Schoenfeld assures us that brief heat spikes in Southern California during February are not unheard of. However, she notes that if the heat were to persist for an extended period, it would be quite extraordinary. Fortunately, the forecast predicts a significant cool-down by Friday, bringing temperatures back to more typical levels.
The weekend forecast offers some relief, with temperatures expected to be only 4 to 8 degrees above average, compared to the current 15 to 20 degrees above normal. Santa Ana winds and a high-pressure system have been the culprits behind the recent heat, but they are expected to subside by Thursday.
The National Weather Service provided a list of record-breaking temperatures on February 4th, including LAX at 87 degrees (previously 84), UCLA at 88 degrees (previously 85), and several other locations with notable highs.
