"It's crucial, especially in those early years," Jalen Wilson shared with The Post. "College and the NBA are worlds apart. Having experienced players to guide you is invaluable."
But who will fill this vital role?
DeMarre Carroll, Jared Dudley, and Ed Davis previously mentored D'Angelo Russell and Caris LeVert. Now, with five rookies, including three teenagers, the Nets must identify the perfect mentors.
"I'm here to share my NBA wisdom," Terance Mann told The Post. "I've learned a lot in my seven years, and I'm happy to pass it on."
However, even with experienced players like Mann, Nic Claxton, Michael Porter Jr., and Haywood Highsmith, the team's leadership remains a topic of debate.
"They lack mature veterans," Kenny Anderson warned. "It's great to be thrown into the deep end, but without strong leadership, it's a recipe for disaster."
Claxton, the longest-serving Net, and Porter, a championship winner, are key candidates. Highsmith brings Finals experience, while Mann has started in a Western Conference finals. Yet, questions linger over Porter's controversial reputation, Highsmith's injury, and Claxton's disciplinary issues.
"T-Mann is definitely a leader," Wilson affirmed. "These guys have seen the playoffs, and their insights are invaluable."
Despite the challenges, the Nets' culture remains a priority. Sources reveal that leadership was a key factor in retaining Haywood Highsmith over Kobe Bufkin, even with Highsmith's injury setback.
"Haywood is an exceptional professional," Jordi Fernández praised. "His impact on our culture is undeniable. He's a positive influence, and that's invaluable."
