Air India and IndiGo Jets Collide at Mumbai Airport: Aviation Safety Under Scrutiny (2026)

A close call at Mumbai airport! Two major Indian airlines, Air India and IndiGo, are under the microscope as their jets narrowly avoided a more serious disaster when their wingtips brushed against each other. This nail-biting incident occurred on Tuesday evening, around 7:30 PM local time (2:00 PM GMT). The Air India plane was preparing for its journey to Coimbatore in the southern part of India, while the IndiGo aircraft had just completed its flight from Hyderabad. While the exact number of people on board hasn't been revealed by the airlines or the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), it's worth noting that a typical Airbus A320 operating domestic routes in India can carry between 150 and 186 passengers, along with a crew of six to eight members. Thankfully, in this instance, no injuries were reported. An Air India spokesperson confirmed that their aircraft sustained damage to its wingtip and that arrangements were promptly made for the affected passengers. IndiGo also reassured that all their passengers were safe and had disembarked without issue, confirming that an inquiry is now in progress.

But here's where it gets controversial... This incident isn't happening in a vacuum. It arrives amidst a period of heightened scrutiny regarding aviation safety in India, following a string of technical glitches and ground-handling mishaps. Just recently, on Sunday, an Air India flight was grounded in Bengaluru after the pilot reported a malfunctioning fuel control switch. Interestingly, the regulator later stated that no defect was found, and the aircraft had completed its flight safely. And this is the part most people miss... In January, the DGCA launched an investigation after an Air India Airbus A350's engine ingested a cargo container while taxiing at Delhi airport. Authorities are examining these incidents individually, following standard safety protocols.

What do you think? Are these isolated incidents, or do they point to a larger systemic issue in Indian aviation safety? Share your thoughts in the comments below – we'd love to hear your perspective!
