4 1990s One-Hit Wonders That Deserved Bigger Hits (Deep Dive & Hidden Stories) (2026)

Ever wonder why some incredible songs vanish after just one moment in the spotlight? The music industry, with its ever-changing tastes, has a habit of making some truly fantastic tracks fade away after a single chart-topping hit. The 1990s, in particular, were filled with these musical one-hit wonders. These artists created amazing songs that deserved more recognition. Let's dive into some of the most memorable examples!

"Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O’Connor:

Sinéad O’Connor, the Irish singer known for her protest songs, gave us the global smash hit "Nothing Compares 2 U" in 1990, which soared to No. 1 worldwide. Her subsequent work, including tracks like "The Emperor’s New Clothes" and "Success Has Made A Failure Of Our Home," showcased her undeniable talent. But here's where it gets controversial... Despite the beauty of her music, she never charted in the Top 40 again in the US. This might be due to her controversial performance protesting the Catholic Church on Saturday Night Live in 1992. However, in retrospect, many are starting to appreciate her musical genius.

"Epic" by Faith No More:

Faith No More, pioneers of the rap/alternative metal scene in the 1990s, delivered their only major hit, "Epic," in 1990. It's hard to believe that this was their only Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Songs like "Midlife Crisis" from 1992 and "Easy" from 1993 were pretty big hits elsewhere. And this is the part most people miss... Perhaps they were simply ahead of their time for US listeners.

"Stay" by Shakespears Sister:

How Shakespears Sister didn't become a massive pop duo is beyond me. Their blend of gothic and alternative rock was brilliant. Siobhan Fahey (from Ireland) and Marcella Detroit (from the US) had a wide international appeal. Yet, "Stay" from 1992 was their sole Top 40 hit in the United States. They did, however, find success in the UK throughout the decade. "I Don’t Care," their follow-up single, was good enough to at least make it to the Top 40 in the US, but it stalled at No. 55 on the Hot 100.

"Cannonball" by The Breeders:

The Breeders, in my opinion, were one of the best alternative rock bands of the 1990s. Kim Deal truly shined as the frontwoman, and the band's first two albums of the decade were incredible. Sadly, The Breeders are on our list because "Cannonball" from 1993 was their only song to make it onto the Hot 100 chart. "Divine Hammer" and "Saints" were also fantastic tunes!

What do you think? Do you agree with the songs that made this list? Are there any other one-hit wonders from the 1990s that you believe deserved more recognition? Share your thoughts in the comments below!**
